Abstract:

Contains 30 handwritten letters of the Cyrus Stedman family of Medfield, Massachusetts. Twenty-one of the letters are from Cyrus Stedman, on his way to and living in California, to his wife, Mary, and children in Medfield, Massachusetts. Eight of the letters are from his wife and children to Cyrus. He writes of his living conditions, his work as a gunsmith in Uniontown, Humboldt County, news of gold being found along the Frazer River in British Columbia, and skirmishes with Indians. Includes many of the original envelopes. Miscellany includes a small amount of clippings and a church program from 1898 containing news of the deaths of Cyrus' wife, Mary, and his son, Dr. Joseph Stedman. Includes typescript transcriptions of each letter.

Cyrus Stedman (born June 28, 1808, Holliston, Massachusetts ; died March 4, 1865, Medfield, Massachusetts) was a gunsmith who opened a gunsmithing shop in Uniontown [i.e. Arcata] California to capitalize on the mass of immigrants working the gold fields. On October 10, 1832, he married Mary Jordan in Boston, Massachusetts. They had 9 children, Jane G., Laura A., Eliza R., Joseph, Cordelia, Maria G., Jerusha, Hannah J., and Mary Elizabeth. Joseph Stedman served in the Civil War and became a succesful doctor in Jamaica Plains, New York.
